MITCHELL GRIMES, retired farmer, P. O. Carlisle, was born at Poplar Plain s, Fleming County, Ky., Feb. 22, 1827; his father was Dr. Avery Grimes, w ho was born near Clintonville, Bourbon County, about 1790, and expir ed in 1868, after having lived a long and useful life, serving in the w ar of 1812, and practicing in Esculapian arts for over forty years, or unt il a few years before his death, when he engaged in farming; he, a s on of Avery Sr., who came to Bourbon County from the South branch of the P otomac, in
about 1782, and by persistent effort secured a home for himself and famil y, after having paid for the same three times, through false titles and un principled agents. The mother of our subject was Maria Mitchell, who w as born in Georgetown, D. C., and at a tender age was left an orphan by t he death of her father, when she was taken and raised by her uncle, Richa rd Butler of Mason County, the wife of whom was a Lovejoy, and sister to t he mother of Maria Mitchell. Dr. Avery Grimes by his marriage had
seven children, four of whom are living: James, in Fleming County, Mr s. T. D. Bryam, of Nicholas, and the wife of Rev. John T. Enman of Flemi ng County. Mr. Grimes received a common school education and read law t wo years with Judge Andrews of Flemingsburg, studying also the Latin langu age, in which he became quite proficient; he was a young man of energy a nd industry in his studies, through which he acquired a valuable educatio n. He began life as a farmer and trader, shipping extensively to all par ts of the country, having several droves of stock of different kinds on t he road at the same time; in this business he continued more than forty ye ars. He was married Jan. 22, 1850, in Montgomery County, near Mt. Sterlin g, to Elizabeth Frances Smith, who was born near Mt. Sterling, Dec. 22, 18 30, to Enock Smith Jr., who was born near Mt. Sterling in September 179 3; he, the only son now living of Enoch Smith Sr., who came from Virgin ia at a very early date, settling at Mt. Sterling, surveying and laying o ut the town. He settled about 4,000 acres at that place, many acres of wh ich he gave to families who would come in and improve the country with hi m; his wife was Frances Wren; Enoch Jr.'s wife was Sally
Grimes, daughter of James Grimes and Sally Bryant, who was a niece of Dani el Boone's. They had twelve children, eight daughters and four sons; sev en are now living: Dr. Thomas J. in Fayette County, Mo.; Amelia, wife of R ev. Joslin of Linn County, Mo.; Anna E., wife of a Mr. Carter of Lafayet te County, Mo.; the wife of our subject, Mrs. Dr. J. C. Waugh of Fleming C ounty, the widow of Burton W. Stone, Jr.; Mattie B., wife of Silas Marsha ll of Kansas City, Mo.; Loretta, wife of George Whiting, who resides
at the old homestead, near Mt. Sterling, and Virginia C., wife of Roy Sto ne of Bath County. Mr. Grimes by his marriage had two children, one of wh om died at two years, the other at twenty-one years of age. Mr. Grim es is in political ideas, Democratic, and a member of the Masonic order.

Philip sells 1500 acres to Avery for 5 shillings on 7/12/1803. The la nd is on (you guessed it) Stoners Fork, beginning at Lewis Turner 's SE corner. Philip had acquired said land by patent on 4/1/1785 Av ery, then sold the land for 5 shillings to ? Suddeth 7/15/1803. Don't kn ow what else is going on here. May have been an additional piece of la nd in the bargain in another county. Avery is identified as being fr om Bourbon County (next county north of Clark). 1
