Some Pioneers of Central Arizona

This file began with some research on Columbus Gray who settled in the Salt River Valley in August of 1868. It expanded into other pioneer families including the Greenhaws, who traveled with the Grays from Union County, Arkansas, and the Ormes of Maryland. These families were early participants in the reclamation of the Salt River and in early Maricopa County and Arizona Territorial government.

The Arizona Republican, November 6, 1891, page 1:
LITHOGRAPHIC STONE
Another Addition to Arizona's Resources.
The Long-Looked for Mineral, More Sought After of Late Years then the Fabled Philosopher's Stone, Found by Ex-Probate Judge Greenhaw
Hon. Thomas G. Greenhaw, who took an extended trip last summer through northern and eastern Arizona, merely for an outing, did not go for his health altogether, as is proved by the important discovery he has made. The discovery is important indeed-not alone to the discoverer, but to the entire territory. By his energy and observation he has succeeded in adding to the already long list of Arizona's resources.
He made the journey in quest of lithographic stone and has succeeded in finding it, for the specimen he exhibited to the reporter today fulfils all the conditions and answers to all the tests required by the Bavarian stone.
Heretofore the world's supply has been obtained from quarries in Bavaria, but as civilization advances and the calls upon the printers become more frequent, the supply in the Bavarian mines does not equal the demand.
The discovery of a mine of true lithographic stone is a fortune to anyone, and Judge Greenhaw is the fortunate discoverer.

On the same page is this under "Local Brevities":
The Pima Indians have a name for Hon. Thomas G. Greenhaw which is an expressive and musical one. They have named him Pansone, which being interpreted, means the man that needs a great big belt to encircle his anatomy.

In next day's Republican, the story continued:
A NEW RESOURCE
Arizona Has Gold, Silver, and Lithographic Stone
Every Mineral Known to Science and the Arts Is to Be Found in Arizona.-New Discoveries Made Every Day Prove This to Be a Fact
Hon. Thomas G. Greenhaw, the first discoverer of the true lithographic stone in Arizona, or in fact on the American continent, was besieged yesterday by numerous prospectors and wold be searchers for the valuable mineral. Many asserted that in their prospecting they had notoced something very like it, but not thinking it of any importance had passed it by. None of them could tell, however, just where they had seen it.
The discovery of this stone means a great deal to Arizona. It will be the cause of the opening of a new industry and of giving work to many laboreres. The Hon. Thomas G. Greenhaw, in his search for it, traveled over 600 miles through the mountains and deserts of this broad territory, and while he was gone, all his friends thought he was on a pleasure trip. If, as seems likely, he turns out to be a millionaire, he will be willing to call it a pleasure trip also.
