The 1880 census records for the various children indicate Nicholas was born in Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Virginia. Mary A. was the oldest surving child in 1880, so she lived with Nicholas longer than the other children and would seem to have the best recollection of his place of birth. So the data from her census record is used with the acknowledgement that it may be incorrect.
