bullet  General Notes:

From Ramona's Summary
2:10 William Berry

William Berry
, son of James and Sarah Grubbs Berry, according to his 1839 deposition, was born in 1784 in Lincoln (Madison) County, Virginia (Kentucky). W. H. Miller stated that William never married, and the records appear to confirm that.

In March 1800 William, then age sixteen, witnessed a deed between his parents and James White. He was probably living at home yet in 1810, and was the male age 26 to 44 in the household of James and Sarah. The only William listed on this census is the one who was married to Rhoda Crews Moreman, and as stated previously, is not son of James. There is no William on the 1820 census. He seems to have appeared sporadically on the tax lists from 1808.

William's father James died in 1822, and in 1823 and 1824 William and his mother Sarah were paying tax on the Tate's Creek land.

In February 1825 William, with his siblings, sold two 18-1/4 acre parcels of land on Tate's Creek. In November he sold his portion of his father's land on Tate's Creek that would have been his after the death of his mother.

In November 1826 William sold another 111 acres of the Tate's Creek land. He is not found on the 1830 census - the only William being William "G.," who was age 20 to 29, and married to Lucretia Messick.

In January 1831 William witnessed a deed between his brother James H., his wife Emily, and Squire Turner. In November 1834 William "Sr." bought 100 acres on Tate's Creek from his brother-in-law, Thomas Turner. The "Sr." here is to distinguish him from a younger man of the same name - William G., who would be about eighteen years younger.

On 22 April 1839 William gave a deposition at the home of his mother Sarah, stating that he was 55 years old (born 1784), and the son of James, deceased, and Sarah Grubbs Berry.

He is most likely the male, age 50 to 59, living with his mother Sarah, age 70 to 79, on the 1840 census. They are living next door to William's brother James H., age 30 to 39, and his family.

In September 1841 William and his brother James H. mortgaged 110 acres on Tate's Creek, where James and their mother Sarah lived. In December 1842 William and his brother James H. sold another 107-1/2 acres on Tate's Creek.

I do not find William on the 1850 census. His mother Sarah, age 89, is now living with William's brother James and his family. William seems to have been adept at alluding the census taker, and sometimes the tax collector.

In December 1852 William, his brother James H., and James H.'s son James T., were buyers at the estate sale of Sarah Grubbs Berry.

William is on the 1855 Madison County tax list, with brother James H., and nieces and nephew.

William died on 27 November 1857, at age 73. He left no wife or children to administer his estate, and on 7 December administration was granted to his nephew, James T. Berry, son of his brother James H. 1 5
