Court: by Hannah PB Berry, Nancy's half-sister, 19 Sep 1837, , Bath, Virginia, USA. 6 7 [transcription and analysis by Geralyn Barry]
The entire case is about the 1816 bill of sale for those 6 slaves John Berry "sold" to his daughter Nancy Berry for $300 with the stipulation that Nancy give to HPBB the slave Sally and her increase when HPBB either married or had issue. Hannah married in Tennessee on 19 Sept 1837 to Elisha W. Rodgers. In late 1837, Hannah and her husband made depositions in an ongoing case (bill of interpleader) brought by Hull in 1821 about proceeds from the sale of the slave Sally. The bill of interpleader was dismissed on 16 Feb 1838, with Hull paying costs. Elisha Rodgers died very shortly after, in August 1838. Hannah then brought her own suit against Hull and Sharrott in Chancery Court in Bath County, probably in early 1840 (April or earlier).
