Both James Given (wife: Elizabeth Graham) and Jennet or Janet Given
(husband: John Berry) were supposed to have been children of William Given and Nancy Agnes Bratton, although I haven't confirmed that myself in original documents. I think it is probably correct, but I would prefer to have documentation.

There are actually quite a few connections between the Given family and the Berry and Hamilton families, and there may be more that I haven't found yet. The ties between the families were very strong because of three Berry-Given marriages between first cousins and one Hamilton-Given marriage between first cousins, once removed (who were also related several ways by marriage). All this was in the same Given family, among the children of James and Elizabeth Given. The common ancestors of all these people who married each other were William Given and Nancy Agnes Bratton (if indeed James and Jennet/Janet were brother and sister). I suspect there could have been some connection between the Given, Berry and Hamilton families in earlier generations too - just waiting for us to discover it.

The Given family - Elizabeth (widow of James Given) and some of their children - also moved to Lee County, Iowa and nearby Wapello County from around Bath and Nicholas Counties (Va and WV today). Some of them later lived in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. James Given and Elizabeth Graham were married 31 July 1806 in Bath County, Virginia. They appear to have had at least 11 children, but I have not traced them all. The ones I have looked at in particular are those who went to Iowa and had some obvious Berry or Hamilton connection. They are:

1) Nancy Given - b. 22 Feb 1811 Virginia; d. 10 Dec 1886 Guthrie County, Iowa; m. 16 July 1829 to William Berry in Nicholas County, VA (today WV). William Berry was a son of John Berry and Jennet (Janet) Given.
James Given and Jennet Given were siblings (children of William Given and Nancy Agnes Bratton according to unconfirmed online sources). That makes Nancy Given and William Berry not only husband and wife, but also first cousins.

2) Isabel Given - b. 8 Jan 1816 Virginia; d. 20 Apr 1907 Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa; buried Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa; m. 18 Nov 1834 to George Berry, place unknown (will have to check my notes to see if I found out on this trip where they married). George and Isabel had left their farm in Lee County and were living at Mt. Pleasant in Henry County (just north of Lee County) when George died on 10 June 1884. He is buried in Forest Home Cemetery also, which is probably why Isabel was brought there to be buried. We visited this cemetery on our trip this summer - no gravestones for them were visible, but I think we found newspaper articles about their deaths and burials - will update you on after I finish organizing my mountain of photocopies, which got a bit disheveled on the trip. George Berry was also a son of John Berry and Jennet (Janet) Given, which makes George and Isabel first cousins as well as husband and wife - just like Nancy Given and William Berry.

So, two brothers married two sisters who also were their first cousins.
But there was yet another such marriage -

3) Thomas Graham Given - b. 13 Oct 1818 Virginia; d. unknown; m. 20 July
1842 to Elizabeth (Betsy) Berry in Lee County, Iowa. Betsy was a daughter of John Berry and Jennet (Janet) Given and was about 10 years older than Thomas. So again, we have a first cousin marriage - that makes three between the same two Given and Berry families. It appears that Betsy died between 1850 and 1856 and Thomas re-married someone called Amanda, probably nee Sharpe.

4) John Hamilton Given - b. 27 Oct 1820 Virginia; m. 4 Jan 1848 to Cynthiann Martin in Wapello County, Iowa. Note that his middle name was Hamilton - why? Rachel Berry (whose mother was Jennet Given) had just married James N. Hamilton in 1818. Was this child named for him? Jennet would have been the niece of James Given. Did James and his wife name a son for his niece's husband? Or was there another closer connection to the Hamilton family? John H. Given lived in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa and was blacksmith and later, a plow manufacturer.

5) Rachel Carlisle Given - b. 10 Feb 1829 Virginia; d. after 13 June 1896, probably Atchison County, Kansas; m. 29 Oct 1847 at Dahlonega, Wapello County, Iowa to Fielding Granville McClintock (aka McClintic) by Rev. Moses F. Shinn. I looked at the Civil War pension application for McClintock and his widow at the National Archives on our trip this summer and extracted parts of it; the staff accidentally returned the file to the stacks before I had finished my extraction. My notes say that I re-ordered it from the stacks, but for some reason, I didn't finish the extraction and we also did not scan any parts of the file. At this point, I'm not sure what happened. Maybe it was not yet back in the stacks when I requested it and we just ran out of time. I wish I had made a note about that because it's bugging me now! Anyway, it was not a top priority and perhaps I just gave up and went on to something else.
But if I had read it all, I would have known when and where Rachel died.

6) Rebecca Given - b. 4 Dec 1846 Virginia; d. 28 Dec 1885 Pella, Marion County, Iowa; buried Oakwood Cemetery, Pella, Marion County, Iowa; m. 26 Apr 1848 to Robert G. (or M.) Hamilton in Wapello County, Iowa. This is the same Robert G. Hamilton I wrote about in yesterday's email - the son of James N. Hamilton and Rachel Berry. Rachel was a daughter of John Berry and Jennet Given. Jennet was a sister of James Given. That makes Robert and Rebecca first cousins, once removed. We also visited Oakwood Cemetery in Pella on our trip this summer - very disappointing. The old section has few standing gravestones - none for this couple were visible. But we did find newspaper articles about their deaths and burials and lots of other interesting things that I will have to save for future emails.

A few of the other children of James Given and Elizabeth Graham also went to Iowa, but I have not traced them much.

Here is some additional information on the above Given family members:

~ Elizabeth Given [widow of James] - 1846 on tax list Wapello Co. Iowa; 1850 in District 13, Wapello Co, Iowa with son John H.; 1860 in Des Moines with son John H.; 1870 in Des Moines next to son John H

~ Thomas Graham [T.G.] Given - 1841 patent for 40 acres (pre-emption) in Lee Co. Iowa; 1841 marriage to Elizabeth Berry in Lee Co. Iowa; 24 Apr
1846 - Thomas G. Given & Elizabeth his wife sold 40 acres to Zenas Beeson; 1846 on tax list Wapello Co. Iowa; 1847 on tax list Wapello Co.
Iowa; 1850 in District 13, Wapello Co, Iowa with Elizabeth; 1851 IGI shows a submitted (not extracted) marriage to Amanda Sharp; 1856 was a farmer in Ottumwa, Center Twp, Wapello County, Iowa with new wife Amanda, probably nee Sharpe; 1860 in 1st Ward, Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co. Kansas and Thomas was a blacksmith like his brother John.

~ John H. Given - 1847 on tax list Wapello Co. Iowa; 1848 - marriage to Cynthiann Martin in Wapello Co. Iowa; 1850 in District 13, Wapello Co, Iowa with mother Elizabeth; 1860-1880 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa

~ Rachel Given - 1847 marriage to Fielding G. McClintic in Wapello County, Iowa; received Civil War pension; 1860 in Plattville Twp, Mills County, Iowa; 1870 in Hamilton, Hancock County, Illinois (Hancock County is just across the river from Lee County - Hamilton is opposite Keokuk; Henderson County, where Samuel B. Hamilton lived, is just north of Hancock County); 1880 in Montebello, Hancock County, Illinois; later in Atchison, Atchison Co. Kansas, according to Civil War pension application

In 1850, an Elizabeth Hamilton was living with the family of Thomas G.
Given in District 13, Wapello Co, Iowa (age 19, b. Indiana, attending school). She was another daughter of James N. Hamilton and Rachel Berry. So, she was living with her aunt Elizabeth Berry, who was married to her cousin Thomas G. Given. And yes, that birthplace of Indiana is correct for Elizabeth Hamilton: they spent time in Indiana on their trek from Bath County VA to Lee County, Iowa. I had suspected this was true, but on this trip I found an account telling "the rest of the story", and it's very interesting. More about that in another email - tomorrow, I hope. I have to find that article and do the extraction.
